A few simple ingredient swaps can make a classic grilled cheese more nutritious without taking away the comfort kids love. Using higher-fiber bread increases whole grains, fiber, and iron, while adding a thin layer of hummus or mashed avocado boosts fiber, healthy fats, and extra nutrients. If your child isn’t ready for flavor changes, serving grilled cheese in fun shapes alongside fiber- and protein-rich foods is another easy way to build a balanced meal.
Ingredients:
- 2 slices high-fiber whole grain bread
- 2 slices cheddar cheese
- 2 tbsp hummus (or mashed avocado)
- 1 tsp butter (or olive oil)
- apple slices (optional, for serving)
- berries (optional, for serving)
- carrot sticks (optional, for serving)
- cucumber slices (optional, for serving)
- turkey slices (optional, for serving)
- Greek yogurt (optional, for serving)
Ingredients are subject to availability at local stores. Unavailable items will be automatically substituted at best-effort.
Directions
- Spread a thin layer of hummus or mashed avocado onto one side of each slice of high-fiber whole grain bread.
- Place the cheddar cheese between the bread slices.
- Lightly butter the outside of the sandwich or brush with olive oil.
- Heat a nonstick skillet over medium heat.
- Cook the sandwich for 3–4 minutes per side until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is completely melted.
- For children who are sensitive to changes in flavor or texture, simply use the higher-fiber bread while skipping the hummus or avocado until they’re ready.
- Cut the grilled cheese into fun shapes using cookie cutters if desired.
- Serve in a muffin tray alongside fruit, vegetables, Greek yogurt, or turkey slices to provide additional fiber and protein.
