The Picky Eater Reset: Build-Your-Own Teriyaki Rice Bowls

June 24, 2026

This Recipe is part of our Picky Eater Reset

Why It’s Included

Rice bowls are an excellent next step in food exploration because they allow children to see every ingredient clearly before deciding what belongs in their bowl.

Tonight introduces several vegetables alongside familiar foods like rice and chicken. Children maintain full control over their meal while gaining repeated exposure to ingredients they may normally avoid.

Research shows children become more comfortable with new foods through repeated low-pressure interactions. Even seeing an ingredient on the table contributes to familiarity.

The goal tonight isn’t to build the healthiest rice bowl.

The goal is to help children become comfortable around a wider variety of foods.

Step 1: Cook the Rice

Prepare rice according to package directions. Fluff with a fork and set aside.

Step 2: Cook the Chicken

Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add diced chicken. Cook for 6–8 minutes until fully cooked and lightly golden. Transfer to a serving bowl.

Step 3: Prepare the Vegetables

Steam broccoli until tender. Shred carrots. Slice cucumbers and green onions. Place every ingredient into its own bowl. Keep everything separate and visible.

Step 4: Create the Rice Bowl Bar

Arrange rice, chicken, sauces, and toppings buffet-style. Children should be able to clearly see every ingredient. Remember: Children do not need to use every topping. The goal is exploration and participation.

Step 5: Build the Bowls

Start with rice. Add chicken if desired. Choose sauces and toppings. Some children may choose rice, chicken, and teriyaki sauce only. Others may experiment with vegetables. Both outcomes are successful.

Step 6: Serve

Serve immediately. Leave extra toppings available in the center of the table for continued exploration.
