The Picky Eater Reset: Build-Your-Own Breakfast-for-Dinner Bar

June 24, 2026

This Recipe is part of our Picky Eater Reset

Why It’s Included

Breakfast foods are often among the most accepted foods for picky eaters.

Tonight’s dinner uses familiar foods like scrambled eggs, pancakes, and breakfast potatoes as a safe foundation while introducing fruits, vegetables, and toppings that children can explore at their own pace.

Research shows that repeated exposure works best when children feel in control. By allowing every ingredient to remain separate and optional, children can interact with new foods without feeling pressured to eat them.

The goal tonight isn’t to create the perfect breakfast plate.

The goal is to make new foods feel familiar.

Step 1: Prepare the Fruit & Vegetables

Wash and prepare strawberries, blueberries, spinach, banana, bell peppers, and mushrooms. Place every ingredient into its own serving bowl. Keep all ingredients separate and visible.

Step 2: Cook the Sausage

Cook turkey sausage according to package directions. Transfer to a serving plate.

Step 3: Make the Scrambled Eggs

Heat butter in a skillet over medium heat. Whisk eggs in a bowl. Pour into skillet and gently stir until fully cooked. Transfer to a serving bowl.

Step 4: Toast the Waffles

Toast waffles until golden brown. If using pancakes, warm according to package directions. Arrange on a serving platter.

Step 5: Create the Breakfast Bar

Arrange waffles or pancakes, eggs, sausage, fruit, vegetables, cheese, and syrup buffet-style. Children should be able to clearly see every ingredient.

Remember: Children do not need to use every ingredient. The goal is exploration and participation.

Step 6: Build the Plates

Allow each family member to create their own breakfast dinner plate. Some children may choose waffles and syrup. Others may explore fruits, eggs, and vegetables. Both outcomes are successful.

Parent Coaching Corner

Tonight is about familiarity.

Avoid:

“You need fruit.”

“You should try the spinach.”

“Take a bite first.”

Instead say:

“Which breakfast food looks interesting today?”

“What would you order at your breakfast restaurant?”

“Can you describe your plate?”

Children become more adventurous when food feels safe and predictable.
