The most decadent, custardy brioche French toast you’ll ever make! Thick slices of brioche are soaked in a spiced vanilla custard and cooked low and slow until perfectly golden brown. Top with maple syrup, fresh berries, or powdered sugar for the ultimate breakfast or brunch.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup whole milk
- 2 large eggs
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg (ground)
- 1/4 tsp cloves (ground)
- 1 tbsp granulated sugar
- 1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract
- 6 slices thick cut brioche (or challah bread)
- clarified butter (or unsalted butter)
Ingredients are subject to availability at local stores. Unavailable items will be automatically substituted at best-effort.
Directions
- In a shallow dish, combine whole milk, eggs, cinnamon, ground nutmeg, ground cloves, granulated sugar, and pure vanilla extract. Whisk together to form a smooth custard.
- Preheat a large skillet over low heat. Add clarified butter or unsalted butter to the skillet.
- Dip thick cut brioche or challah bread slices into the custard, letting the bread soak until it feels spongy, about 5-10 seconds per side.
- Let excess custard drip off the bread, then place it in the preheated skillet.
- Cook for 7½ minutes per side, or until the bread becomes golden brown. Do not move or flip the bread while it’s cooking—just flip once after the time is up.
- Remove French toast from the skillet after both sides are golden brown and the custard has cooked all the way through.
- Serve warm with your favorite toppings: maple syrup, fresh berries, powdered sugar, or whipped cream. Enjoy!
