Directions

  1. In a shallow dish, combine whole milk, eggs, cinnamon, ground nutmeg, ground cloves, granulated sugar, and pure vanilla extract. Whisk together to form a smooth custard.
  2. Preheat a large skillet over low heat. Add clarified butter or unsalted butter to the skillet.
  3. Dip thick cut brioche or challah bread slices into the custard, letting the bread soak until it feels spongy, about 5-10 seconds per side.
  4. Let excess custard drip off the bread, then place it in the preheated skillet.
  5. Cook for 7½ minutes per side, or until the bread becomes golden brown. Do not move or flip the bread while it’s cooking—just flip once after the time is up.
  6. Remove French toast from the skillet after both sides are golden brown and the custard has cooked all the way through.
  7. Serve warm with your favorite toppings: maple syrup, fresh berries, powdered sugar, or whipped cream. Enjoy!
