Lawand Challow: The creamiest, most flavorful Afghan chicken dish, featuring tender chicken and a rich, herby yogurt sauce. It’s a comforting and aromatic meal that’s sure to become a favorite.
Ingredients:
- 2 whole onions
- 2 cups chicken (dark meat)
- 6 cloves garlic
- 1 tbsp salt
- 1 tbsp coriander
- 1 tsp red pepper flakes (to taste)
- 1/2 tbsp turmeric
- 1/2 cup water (hot)
- 1 dehydrated pepper (optional)
- 1 cup sour cream (or labne)
- 1 tbsp whole yogurt
- 1 bunch fresh cilantro

Directions
- Chop two whole onions and fry them in a large pot on high heat until golden brown.
- Add your chicken pieces (or red meat) to the pot with the onions.
- Add garlic paste to the pot, along with 1 tablespoon coriander, red pepper flakes to taste, and 1/2 tablespoon turmeric. Stir to combine.
- Pour in about 1/2 cup of hot water and add a dehydrated pepper (optional).
- In a separate bowl, mix 1 cup of sour cream (or labne) with 1 full tablespoon of whole yogurt until smooth.
- Add the yogurt mix to the pot, stirring well.
- Add an entire bunch of fresh cilantro, chopped.
- Reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and let simmer so the chicken finishes cooking and the sauce thickens to a creamy consistency. Serve and enjoy!
