Lawand Challow: The creamiest, most flavorful Afghan chicken dish, featuring tender chicken and a rich, herby yogurt sauce. It’s a comforting and aromatic meal that’s sure to become a favorite.

Directions

  1. Chop two whole onions and fry them in a large pot on high heat until golden brown.
  2. Add your chicken pieces (or red meat) to the pot with the onions.
  3. Add garlic paste to the pot, along with 1 tablespoon coriander, red pepper flakes to taste, and 1/2 tablespoon turmeric. Stir to combine.
  4. Pour in about 1/2 cup of hot water and add a dehydrated pepper (optional).
  5. In a separate bowl, mix 1 cup of sour cream (or labne) with 1 full tablespoon of whole yogurt until smooth.
  6. Add the yogurt mix to the pot, stirring well.
  7. Add an entire bunch of fresh cilantro, chopped.
  8. Reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and let simmer so the chicken finishes cooking and the sauce thickens to a creamy consistency. Serve and enjoy!
