30-Minute Beef with Black Bean Sauce

A fast, bold, and savory stir-fry that comes together in 30 minutes. Tender beef, crisp vegetables, and a rich, umami-loaded black bean sauce — perfect for a weeknight dinner.


Ingredients

  • 1 lb (450g) beef sirloin, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp fermented black bean sauce
  • 1 tbsp oyster sauce
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch + 2 tbsp water (slurry)
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1-inch ginger, grated
  • 1 small onion, sliced
  • 1 bell pepper, sliced
  • 2 green onions, chopped
  • Neutral oil, for cooking
  • Cooked rice, to serve

 

Beef in black bean sauce

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine sliced beef with 1 tbsp soy sauce and 1 tsp sesame oil. Let marinate for 10 minutes while you prep the vegetables.
  2. Heat oil in a large pan or wok over medium-high heat. Sear the beef in batches until browned but not fully cooked through. Set aside.
  3. Add more oil if needed, then stir-fry garlic, ginger, and onions for 1–2 minutes until fragrant. Add bell peppers and cook for another 2 minutes.
  4. Stir in black bean sauce and oyster sauce. Return the beef to the pan and toss to coat.
  5. Mix the cornstarch slurry and pour it into the pan. Stir until the sauce thickens slightly.
  6. Add chopped green onions and stir-fry everything together for 1 more minute.
  7. Serve hot over steamed rice and enjoy!
