1. Make the Garlic Burger Sauce
In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, chopped pickles, pickle juice, garlic, smoked paprika, and black pepper.
Mix until smooth and refrigerate while preparing the burgers.
2. Caramelize the Onions
- Melt butter in a skillet over medium-low heat.
- Add sliced onions and a pinch of salt.
- Cook for 12–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened and golden brown. For deeper caramelization, continue cooking another 10–15 minutes.
3. Prepare the Smashburger Pitas
- Divide ground beef into four equal portions (4 oz each).
- Lay the Toufayan Sourdough Pitas flat.
- Press one portion of ground beef directly onto each pita, spreading it into a thin, even layer almost to the edges.
- Season with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
Tip: Keep the beef thin so it cooks evenly and the pita remains easy to fold.
4. Cook the Smashburgers
- Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat with a light coating of avocado oil.
- Place one pita beef-side down into the hot skillet.
- Press gently with a spatula to ensure good contact.
- Cook for approximately 3–4 minutes, until the beef develops a browned crust.
- Flip the pita and cook for another 2–3 minutes, until the beef reaches 160°F and the pita is lightly golden.
- Add 1–2 slices of American cheese over the beef.
- Cover briefly to melt the cheese.
Repeat with the remaining pitas.
5. Assemble
Top each smashburger pita with:
- Caramelized onions
- Shredded iceberg lettuce
- Dill pickle slices
- A generous drizzle of garlic burger sauce
Fold the pita in half like a taco and serve immediately.
